University of Riverside and Impact of California Governor Newsom’s Statewide Stay At Home order

To preserve the public health and safety, and to ensure the healthcare delivery system is capable of serving all, and prioritizing those at the highest risk and vulnerability, all residents are directed to immediately heed the current State public health directives, which I ordered the Department of Public Health to develop for the current statewide status of COVID-19. Those directives are consistent with the March 19, 2020, Memorandum on Identification of Essential Critical Infrastructure Workers During COVID-19 Response, found at: https://covid19.ca.gov/.   – Governor Gavin Newsom

On Friday, March 20, 2020 the university received clear direction from the State of California that higher education is identified as an essential service within this executive order. The guidance supports educators in public and private K-12 schools, colleges, and universities for purposes of facilitating distance learning or performing other essential functions—if operating under rules for social distancing—can continue to perform essential functions. All other services are being provided on a remote basis.

California moved into Stage 2 of modifying the state’s Stay-at-Home order on May 8, 2020. Our progress in achieving key public health metrics will allow a gradual re-opening of California’s economy.

We are now in early Stage 2, where retail (curbside and delivery only), related logistics and manufacturing, office workplaces, limited personal services, outdoor museums, and essential businesses can open with modifications. The state is issuing guidance to help these workplaces reopen safely.  Stage 2 expansion will be phased in gradually. Some communities may move through Stage 2 faster if they are able to show greater progress.

***University of Riverside courses and events, will remain virtual until further notice.***
